HISTORY OF HOLY FAMILY ASHA NIWAS

Holy Family Asha Niwas belongs to the congregation of the Holy Family and was founded by St. Mother Mariam Theresia in 1914. The Congregation has spread its routes far and wide. Today it has more than 2000 nuns working in, about 200 convents around the world. The congregation reached North India in 1964 and has been carrying out large number of social and charitable activities in - orphanages, homes for aged and disabled, vocational training centres for poor girls, health care centres, women empowerment activities, and educational institutes in various parts of India and abroad.

The nuns of the Congregation of the Holy Family acknowledged the need of helpless girls in Delhi, the capital city of India and thus undertook a new project providing shelter, education and rehabilitation to the street girls in this Capital City.  The project was started on April 26th 2001 at Mahavir Enclave, (Palam) with five children. Girls are being taken from the of age 4 to 18 years.  As the number kept increasing a land was bought and a new building was constructed at Najafgarh, so that the girls could receive higher education. It is located at Dichavu Road, Near Dichavu Gaon, Najafgarh, New Delhi.

We had 25 girls in Mahavir Enclave and 20 girls at Najafgarh, among them 18 girls got married and are well settled in their life.  Each of this centre is being looked after by the Holy Family nuns. Presently six nuns are assigned to work with and care for these children. Holy Family Asha Niwas is a home that promotes secular values and celebrates all the Indian festivals to foster national and religious harmony.

As per JJ Act, we have to give lot many facilities to girls in the centre. Since we had lesser facilities available at Mahavir Enclave due to smaller rooms and lack of ventilation, we decided to close down Mahavir Enclave centre and shift all the children to Najafgarh. So the children were shifted to Najafgarh in February 2018. Most of the children have completed their secondary education and the higher education. Many of them are working independently with different jobs and we still keep them supporting in all the walks of life as their parents. At Present we have got 21 girls in ASHA NIWAS Najafgarh. All the married girls and those are working independently come for family gatherings, Christmas celebrations and the other celebrations as per occasion.
